Quilting update!

The Tulip quilt is starting to show some progress.  This week, I have been working hard but it sure doesn't seem that way on this quilt top.  Monday - Wednesday was just nothing but working on stitching in the ditch.

Then, on Friday I started working on adding details to the borders, that's when things just were not working out right for me.

I just didn't like how the borders looked, so I gently took the whole design out.  Then I added the new design of a feathered look to it. I like that a lot better than what i had before.

After I finished what I could on the borders, I started adding the designs to the inner green borders and the sashings.  It came out very nice!

The white corners blocks, I also added a feather block.

In the inner white blocks, I was trying to use a vine motif (below) and I just didn't think it went with the flow of the rest of the quilt.  So, Last Night I took it out and added a different feather block to it.   Which I don't have a good picture of right now, will get it in my next update on of the quilt top.

Now that I have the design finally worked out on this quilt, I can start making some good progress on it.

2012 Designer Mystery BOM Block #12

Well the Tulip Quilt is making some progress after some rough starts yesterday with the borders.  The original design was just not working out so, I had to rip it all out and start over with a different design.  Planning to give you all an update in tomorrows post.

Today, I will show you all the last of the 2012 Designer Mystery BOM #12 - " April Showers".  This block is different from the rest they are still using half squares and flying geese.

But, this time we are making so different sizes of pinwheels with the half squares.

All the pinwheels are connected to the flying geese.

To get this beautiful block!

Here are all the blocks together, I so look forward to getting this one finished and quilted.

Today, husband is working so I am going to do some quilting, to get some progress done on the tulip quilt.

2012 Designer Mystery BOM #11!

Yesterday, I took the day off from quilting the tulip quilt to work on some other quilting projects.  The project I decided to work on was try to finish up the blocks for the 2012 Designer Mystery BOM which I had to left to finish then I could start the process of finishing the top.

Block #11, is called "County Fair",  I love the bright colors in this one.  the block looks difficult but it was very easy to put together.  There really was not that many pieces in this once, yes once again the flying geese are back.

I like the center of this one, it looks like it needs some wind and it will start to spin.

This finished block went together very nicely and everything lined up. Beautiful!

Tomorrow, I will show you the final block.  Time to get some work done on the Tulip Quilt and maybe start working on the finishing this top,

2013 Designer Mystery BOM- Month One

The last 3 days, I have been quilting the Tulip quilt.  Yesterday, afternoon I finished all the ditching everything and started some of the detailing.  So I think I need a break from it today, so I will be going to the studio and working on some projects I want to catch up on.

Last week, I received a package from the Fat Quarter Shop, I was the start of the 2013 Designer Mystery BOM, with the finishing kit.  So the other day, I decided to get this one started. The first of the 12 blocks, is called "Strawberry Picking".  I had never made a block like this one so it was a little challenging, but fun!

First, I need to sew all the strips together, and make sure they all lined up.

Then you need to make all the half squares, which was easy, then sew them into two different sets.

Finally, the challenge was to sew everything together and make everything line up.  After a few mistakes I finally got it. Yeah!

I love the colors of this years BOM, and cant wait to see next months looks like.

Quilting and Catching up!

Tulip quilt is now on the longarm and the quilting has started.  Started with all the stitching in the ditch first, which will probably take the rest of the week to complete.  Then, I will add the details to the quilt.  Make sure you follow my Facebook or Twitter Accounts for updates on the quilting progress.

While, the tulip is on the longarm, I decided to do a little catch up on some of my 2012 Designer Mystery BOM, I left off on Block 9.  So, I pulled out #10 "Sunday Drive".  I was fairly easy of a block to do, like the others in the past.

Now all I have left is #11 & #12 and I can start putting this quilt top together, which I'm looking forward to since 2013 Designers BOM has started.

Preparing the Backing for Longarm!

Today I prepared the backing for the tulip quilt.  This process takes awhile and is little harder when you are dealing with a larger quilt top.

The first step in the whole process is figuring out what size I needed for the backing.  When making the backing for the Longarm remember to add 4"-5" all the way around.

Next, is to cut the number of pieces needed which was 3 pieces at 98" long.

After cutting the pieces, I removed the all the savage pieces.  This allows the backing to give a little more.  Savage need to be removed to make sure that the quilt backing can move around.

Once all savages are removed I laid the backing out flat with right side up and place another piece on top of it with the right side down.  This puts the right sides together.  Then pin the longest sides the pieces together.

Once pinned, I took the backing pieces to the sewing machine and using a running stitch made a 1/2" seam along the side that was pinned. After I finished the first set, I layed the pieces out again and layed the finally piece on top and of the now larger piece with right sides together, then pinned and sewed again.

Once all your pieces are sewn, I press open all the seams.  If I lay the seams to one side this will make the seam area too bulky for the long arm to stitch through.

Now all the sewing and pressing is done, I made sure all the sides are square and will lay flat.  Now that it is square it is ready for the longarm.

Now to pinned on the long arm!
